Business Spotlight: Kings Island's Diamondback

Surveying

Diamondback, the exciting new "hyper coaster" billed as the tallest, fastest, and meanest roller coaster to hit Kings Island, was every bit the unpredictable challenge for us that the name suggests. It's 5,282 feet of steel track rising to heights over 200 feet and covering 10 acres of wooded, rolling terrain, required precise survey measurements of 173 reinforced concrete pier foundations and over 1,000 anchor bolts. Our responsibilities included the staking of these piers, as well as providing three-dimensional, as-built locations of bolt patterns that would later support Diamondback's 852-ton track. Our measurements were verified to extreme tolerances, horizontally as well as vertically, under the scrutiny of the world-renowned ride designer, Bolliger and Mabillard, of Switzerland.

Engineering

Diamondback's wild ride concludes with a plunge into the re-circulating splash-down pool. Our civil engineers provided construction documents for this feature and coordinated the engineering needs between the mechanical-electrical-plumbing contractor and the client. Additional needs included storm water re-routing and re-grading, as well as site design for the maintenance facility and ride station.
